Day 1: Palermo Airport  or rail station transfer to hotel. Overnight   Palermo.

Day 2: Palermo  Explore Palermo. Afternoon transfer from Palermo to Santa Cristina Gela, a stop- at Monreale Cathedral. Time to visit the Cathedral continue to hotel. Option to walk . Busy Road 85% asphalt  8 kms uphill. Overnight Santa Cristina Gela. (BD)Distance: 16.5kms; Upl: 811m; Down  458m

Day 3: Santa Cristina Gela to Corleone  Today climbi Monte Giuhai. Rest and food stop at the Sanctuary  of Tagliavia , if you carry the Pilgrim’s Credential it can be stamped here.  Cross River Belice,  Arrive Corleone. The walk can be shortened by  doing the section to Sancturary of Tagliavia after 13.5 kms. Overnight: 1km from Corleone. (BLD) Packed lunch Distance: 25.3kms; (30% asphalt road / 70% dirt track).

Day 4: Corleone to Prizzi  Travel country roads before arriving Cozzo Spolentino, a short break.  After 10.2 kms pass Masseria Imbriaca   You  will see Prizzi on top of the mountain with its artificial Lake below.   Overnight: Private home Prizzi. (BL) Packed lunch. Distance: 20.8kms; (60% asphalt mostly country roads rest dirt .

Day 5: Prizzi to Castronovo Sicilia Long walk through Monti Sicani Regional Park’. Stop in picnic area. Arrive  Castronovo  the half way point of the Via Francigena.  Overnight stay: Private homes Prizzi .  Breakfast isn’t included, coffee. Bars Open early.

Distance: 24.6kms; (45% asphalt road, mostly country roads / 55% dirt track).

Day 6: Castronovo di Sicilia to Cammarata. Travel Platani valley and cross the river Platani.  Stop at the Grotta di Capelvenere (Grotto of Venus’ Hair).  Pass through Cammarata and San Giovanni Gemini,  Downhill to reach Casale Margherita and overnight.  If you wish to have a day off from walking, this is the spot to relax and enjoy extra night’s stay. Overnight  in Family run Agriturismo  in the countryside of Cammarata. ((BD). Distance: 17.6kms; (35% asphalt road with some country roads/ 65% dirt track).

Day 7: Cammarata to Sutera. Shorter uphill walk  to  Acquaviva Platani. Rest in one of the town’s cafes. Continue on to  Sutera and the sanctuary of San Paolina.  Sutera has been voted one of the  of the prettiest towns in Italy. Overnight stay: B & B Sutera. (BL) packed lunch included. Distance: 14.7kms;(35% asphalt road, mostly on country roads) / 65% dirt track).

Day 8: Sutera to Racalmulto This is the  longest day you will pass ruins of a Roman bridge, and small villages. Reach Racalmuto. The walk can be shortened, by starting from Milena to Racalmuto 10.2kms. The walk from Sutera to Milena mainly on road. Overnight  in  Racalmuto. (B).  Distance: 25.1kms; (65% asphalt & country roads) / 35% dirt track).

Day 9: Racalmuto to Joppolo Giancaxio  Reach Grotte, Comitini and Aragona. Following the Platani valley,  salt and sulphur mining and archaeological site of the Stone of Calathansuderj. Descend into Joppolo Giancaxio. Overnight stay: Restored houses. (B) Distance: 22.4kms; (45% asphalt road, / 55% dirt track).

Day 10: Joppolo Giancaxio to Agrigento Your last day on the Magna Via Francigena and the final destination of Agrigento. You will cut  through fields following the river Akragas,  Your last ascent takes you through a eucalyptus wood into town. Overnight stay: B & B in  Agrigento. Breakfast not included, coffee available. Distance: 13.6kms;(55% asphalt road / 45% dirt track.

Day 11: Agrigento Today time to explore the Valley of the Temples where some of the best-preserved Greek temples outside Greece are still standing oday.  Walking distance there’s also the archaeological museum which is worth a visit.Overnight stay: B & B in a historical house in the centre of Agrigento. Breakfast included.

Day 12: Departure After Breakfast, continue on with your journey.

Note: The Magna Via Francigena is an ancient pilgrimage route from Palermo to Agrigento. 164 kms (plus optional 16.5kms) of wide-open scenery which changes as you trek from north to south. The trail has been used since Roman times up to the Norman period when both pilgrims & the Knights Templar crusaders, on their way to & from the Holy Land. The Normans called these roads Regie Trazzere.
