Looking for a spiritual awakening, or simply to immerse yourself in the mountains? Then this self-guided individual Umbrian walking tour is for you. Stroll from the medieval town of Spoleto into the dark Valnerina woods and along the rugged peaks of the Monti Sibillini National Park. As you breathe the fresh mountain air, you can sample the incredible ‘tartufo nero’, a regional specialty from Norcia. Follow ancient pilgrim routes under the Umbrian sun, visit an ancient Roman abbey, climb the Monte Coscerno and walk the mystical ‘Piano Grande’, a natural plateau nestled in the Sibillini Mountains. Your spirit shall be uplifted. Difficulty Level: 2
TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
Day 1:
Arrive in Spoleto (BB basis). Make sure you arrive early enough to pass a few pleasant hours acclimatizing to your new surroundings and discovering the ancient secrets of this charming Umbrian city. Sit down for a glass of Montefalco wine amidst monuments dating back to Roman times and see for yourself why Spoleto is called the ‘city of art’.
Day 2:
Walk from Spoleto to Scheggino (HB basis). As you bid adieu to lively Spoleto, you walk into the peaceful Valeriana mountains. Cross over the Ponte delle Torri bridge to encounter the magnificent oak forests of Monte Luco. Ascend through Valcieco to the highest ridge of Castelmonte and then descend amidst an overgrown path into the valley near the tiny picturesque village of Scheggino.
Day 3:
Scheggino round walk (HB basis). The River Nera is a source of spiritual awakening and mystical marvels. A light three hour walk leads you to San Pietro in Valle, the oldest abbey in Umbria. Enjoy ample time to visit the impressive elegance and profound beauty of this 7th century church, where the Dukes of Spoleto are buried. Return to Scheggino by public bus.
Day 4:
Walk from Gavelli to Poggiodomo (HB basis). After breakfast, travel by car to the small village of Gavelli for a panoramic walk to the highest point of Monte Coscerno (1.684m).On a clear day you have a 360° view of the breath-taking Umbrian countryside, dotted with the Sibillini peaks to the east and the Gran Sasso to the south. The descent takes you gradually down to Poggiodomo.
Day 5:
Poggiodomo free day or round walk (HB basis). Free day to explore the cosy hamlet of Poggiodomo. We suggest an invigorating round walk along a road from Poggiodomo to the tiny
neighboring village of Usigni. This is unchartered territory, pleasing to anyone seeking encounters with small-town Italian culture. From Usigni, stroll into the shady canyon following a stream to an ancient water mill. Return by foot to Poggiodomo.
Day 6:
Walk from Poggiodomo to Cascia and coach (HB basis). Today’s walk will lead to the town of Cascia, passing through the tiny hamlet of Roccaporena, where Santa Rita was born. You will be immersed in an idyllic an scenery, with nothing but luxurious forests and silence surrounding you. At the end of walk, immerse yourself in the pilgrim’s lifestyle as you wonder the streets of Cascia and visit the large church dedicated to the saint. In the afternoon you taking the local bus to Norcia, a enchanting medieval town famous for its ‘tartufo nero’ and numerous cheese and butcher shops.
Day 7:
The Piano Grande ã Norcia (HB basis). Wind your way by car up to Castelluccio to discover the secret of the Monte Sibillini: the Piano Grande, a vast high-altitude plateau upon which lentils grow and sheep graze. Astonished and amazed you will feel as you climb up the Monte Pattino. To return to Norcia, the descent is steep and offers mesmerizing views.
Day 8:
Arrivederci Norcia! Our services end after breakfast, unless you have booked another service with us.

Walks are along even footpaths, mule tracks, and small gravel roads. You will cross several hamlets and some large villages where the access road has been asphalted. The length of the walks varies from 5 to 19 km’s. There are some steep descents (up to 1.100 m) while the ascents are mild and never more than 600m; alternating days from moderate to demanding hilly terrain.
